In many ways winter is a strange season because it signals the end of yet another year and just makes everyone feel that bit older. However, as it gets colder and the days get darker, there is one shining bright light for us all to look forward to: Christmas.

Christmas is a great time of year for so many reasons, and one of those is the way it brings people together in celebration- all over the world people celebrate with their own traditions.

In the United Kingdom undoubtedly one of the most traditional celebrations of Christmas comes in the form of Christmas markets. These markets are wonderful havens of all things Christmas, and they are an absolute must for anyone spending Christmas in the UK.

So, with that in mind, here’s our list of the best Christmas markets that you can find this year in London.

Leicester Square (9th November – 6th January)

Experience the magic of Christmas right in the heart of London as one of its most famous locations is transformed once again into a winter paradise from the 9th November. There will be several food and drink stalls, as well as a vintage Spiegeltent which will play host to a number of theatrical performances filled with music and laughter.

As one of the longest running markets (8 whole weeks) there really is no excuse not to check it out at some point this festive season!

Greenwich Market (22nd November – 24th December)

Set in the iconic Greenwich village, this market is one of the biggest around with over 150 stalls set to be present this year. You’ll be able to find everything from luxury jewellery, original art and high-end fashion pieces to festive stocking fillers and mulled wine, amongst other traditional Christmas food and drink.

Be sure to get down early if you want to watch the spectacle of the Christmas lights being turned on, which this year will be done by the cast of the Greenwich theatre pantomime, Cinderella.

Kingston (15th November – 31st December)

If you fancy celebrating the festive season in one of the most authentic markets around, then head south of the river this year to picturesque Kingston. The market stalls are all housed in pretty wooden cabins which line streets around the centre of town. The stalls will be selling the usual Christmas food as well as some German style dishes for those who fancy a taste of Bavaria. After you’re done with the shopping, discover the Alpine Village: with more than 200 snows covered trees it’s the perfect place to relax and soak up the atmosphere before heading home.

Southbank (8th December – 6th January)

Celebrate winter this year underneath the glittering lights which will line the stunning Southbank this December. There you’ll find not only countless stalls selling Christmas gifts, but also a packed programme of entertainment with lots festive shows to see and family fun to be had.

With the backdrop of the London Eye, there really are few better settings to enjoy all the wonders that Christmas has to offer.

Something slightly different to the other Christmas markets on this list, as it’s only around for one day, but the Belgravia Christmas market is really not one to miss. This is the perfect place to find a present for those people that you really like… or maybe just for yourself!
